(Sorry if this reads a little polemically - it's a draft FOCUS article)

Is it just me, or are the Green’s shooting themselves in the foot? Everywhere we see a Green candidate standing in the borough, we end up electing a Tory.

This is a shame, because there is no party more committed to environmental issues than the Lib Dems. The Liberal Party had green policies before there ever was a Green Party. And they continue to be the most environmentally conscious of the parties; for example, suggesting that they would reduce income tax for hard working families by 2p in the pound and raise the money instead by environmental taxation. From the recycling on your doorstep to global warming, if you care about the environment you should vote Lib Dem.

Yet wherever the Greens field a candidate, they undermine the Lib Dem vote. Take last May in Clock House. The Liberal Democrats had three of the safest seats on the Council after 2002. But in 2006 the Green candidate took 833 votes. The result was that the Tories gained a seat from the Lib Dems.

The same happened the following month in the Bromley and Chislehurst by-election. Clock House Councillor Ben Abbots was just 633 votes short of defeating the Tory candidate. Yet 811 people voted for the Greens.

The lesson is clear. A vote for the Greens is a vote for the Tories. David Cameron got it wrong in May (as ever). The real slogan of his election campaign should be

VOTE GREEN – GET BLUE!

Dito UKIP, a vote for UKIP is a vote for whoever is chasing the Tories.
